Abstract

The global ecological crisis not only causes physical environmental damage but also reflects humanity's spiritual disconnection from the earth as a sacred home. This article explores the traditional rite of manuan raja ni duhutduhut from the Toba Batak saur matua death tradition as a form of ecological liturgy that unites body, land, and spirituality. This research uses a symbolic hermeneutics approach with a literature review of traditional texts and ecotheological theories from Ronald L. Grimes, Sallie McFague, Leonardo Boff, and Thomas Laqueur. The analysis shows that the act of planting trees in this rite is not merely a symbol of respect for ancestors but also a form of spiritual participation in ecological regeneration. This article proposes a reinterpretation of the rite as a liturgical practice of planting memories that is inclusive and contextual. The implication is that local Toba Batak spirituality has the potential to contribute to the restoration of the relationship between humans and the earth, while also being an expression of ecological faith in response to the global ecological crisis.
